Anna Martin needed a fresh start, one she felt she couldn’t get in her role in customer service. She took a pre-apprenticeship class and fell in love with ironworking. When she took her journeyman’s exam, she had the highest score of 27 people — and she was the only woman. Her fresh start in construction has led to fresh starts for dozens of other women. Martin is now a pre-apprenticeship program instructor for Oregon’s Union Pre-Apprenticeship Construction Training program (U-PACT).

Amy Northcutt, director of education and outreach at Trimble, believes in the adage, “representation matters.” As a queer woman in construction, she said she never saw someone like herself in leadership roles at construction firms. She has worked both within and outside of Trimble to increase that representation.

“I think we can do a lot to encourage future generations by continuing to participate and make progress in this space,” Northcutt said. “We can show future generations that this is a space for them.”

Amber Page was raised by a carpenter, but she didn’t initially enter the construction field.

“I worked in aviation for a number of years and got really burnt out,” she said. “I didn’t really know what I wanted to do. I started working for Skanska, a construction company. I knew about them because they were building all the airports I was working in.”

“For me, construction was kind of an accident,” said Kerri Riggio, superintendent at Suffolk Construction. “I came home from college, and a family friend offered me a job for procurement at an infrastructure company. It was a full-time job, and I was the assistant warehouse manager. I helped with purchasing materials we needed for jobs, making sure our warehouse was stocked with general items we needed.”

A lot of construction companies start with a dream, but there aren’t many that start because of a late-night visit from a deceased relative and a “literal” passing of the torch.

Ebony Jennings owns Wisconsin-based Jennings Asphalt, which was founded by her grandfather in 1984. When her grandfather passed away in 1996, no one in the family stepped up. In 2011, Jennings told family members that she wanted to restart the business.

Brit Fuller, chief operating officer at Nashville, Tennessee-based Building Company Number 7 (Build Co. 7), said she fell into construction by accident. Working for a company that outsourced administrative and marketing tasks for businesses, she landed a construction client, which led to the creation of a new arm of that company.

Build Co. 7 specializes in historic renovations in the East Nashville area, which is what drew Fuller to the company.
